Sufism on ‘Black Lives Matter’
“When the phrase ‘Black Lives Matter’ was coined, it seems we were intentionally setting the bar low for our low expectations . . . Just trying to get one another to acknowledge that much. But when it was translated into Korean recently, searching for the right equivalent, the word they used for ‘matter’ actually meant ‘precious’ I’m told. That is the real point of Black Lives Matter: Black Lives are Precious. The Sufi teachings of wahdat al-wujud, the ‘unity of all being,’ mean precisely this: all being is precious, all being is sacred, and no part of it more so than those parts of our being which we are not treating as precious, as sacred. This is how we take the measure of our realization as Sufis, by recognizing as precious those parts of our selves and our society that we are currently treating badly! Black Lives are Precious.”

Sufism on ‘Loving Our Neighbor’
"Many have said, ‘I can love God, but not human beings.’ This is like saying to God, ‘I love you, but not your image.’ Can you hate human beings, in which God’s image is found, and yet claim to love God? If you are intolerant and unwilling to sacrifice, can you really claim to love of the sustainer of all being?" — Hazrat Inayat Khan, Gathaka XVI
